so there i was worrying that Jimmy was angry at me for no reason. the email was scary: "it's really important" etc etc.
as it turns out:

to his dismay?
this was pretty much the worst case scenario as i had to reject him nicely. please: five weeks to get a dress and - most importantly - shoes. plus, i barely know him and
Jimmy says: now i'm just dying to go to prom with ian
Jimmy says: well. u know what i mean
he has an obsession with Ian, who is a popular genius (jealousy) in Physics. and since i'm in Physics and know his date, who is also in Physics, i am his "ticket". very tactful, especially:
Jimmy says: you should be honored i even considered.
you know what? i'll be in his place this time next year - left high and dry with shoes and dress and no date. karma.
Jimmy says: they darn girls took ian out again!
